Non-Destructive Testing Technician

Non-Destructive Testing Technician is a job that measures materials strength in aerospace, automotive, construction, petrochemical and power industries. The tests looks for flaws that might otherwise cause planes to crash, reactors to fail, trains to derail, pipelines to burst, and a variety of less visible, but equally troubling events. In order to become a NDT technician you need many different techniques including liquid penetrant, magnetic particle testing, radiography and ultrasonic testing to test the integrity of a component without actually destroying it. Non destructive testing is used in all sectors of industry including steel production, nuclear, welding, oil and petro-chemical, automotive and aerospace.

You need to have your highschool dipolma or you need to be a mature student which is a person 19 years of age or older and have been out of school for at least one year.

College of the North Atlantic offer's this program but only on the Port aux Basques campus. It is a one year program that you need to complete and get the needed amount of hours in order to pass the course. After you finish the course you can join the work force as a Non-Destructive Testing Technician. There are three levels that you need to complete, the roles and responsibilies change in each new level.
  1. 1. Level I is a technicians that is qualified to perform only specific tests under close supervision by your teacher or a higher level personnel.

2. Level II engineers who are able to test equipment and help level I technicians with their tests.

3. Level III are usually very experienced engineers or technicians. These technicians can perform any NDT tests. They are expected to have a wide knowledge with the technology and materials.
